Smoke and ash filled the air as a result of the fire that started in Camarillo Springs yesterday morning. Strong winds blew the fire south east to Malibu Canyon. The National Park service has closed Cheeseboro Canyon due to the threat of the fire spreading to open space there.
Several Malibu Canyon evacuees called their Agoura neighbors, seeking refuge. The Old Agoura Park equestrian arena has been used as a staging area for evacuation in the past. 28 horses filled the arena when the Bell Canyon fire spread to Cheeseboro Canyon in 2009. The arena manager, Ron Troncatty, recommended that evacuees travel to designated horse evacuation centers at Pierce College or Ventura County Fairgrounds. It doesn’t make sense, says Troncatty, for horses to be moved from south of the freeway in Malibu Canyon, to north of the freeway in Agoura Hills, when both areas are in the path of the same fire.
